How San Antonio Rental Property Residents Can Deal with Neighbor Disputes Outside a Property Manager’s Control

Kevin Knight - Monday, January 6, 2020

No one likes to deal with noisy and problematic neighbors. Sometimes, you’ll love your home but find yourself irritated with neighbors who are disruptive and loud. Maybe they throw parties that go late into the night or they have enough cars parked outside to look like an automotive business. Maybe their overgrown lawns make the whole street look unkempt, or perhaps there’s just a difference in personality that makes living next door nearly unbearable.

You can talk to your professional San Antonio property manager or landlord, but unless the neighbor is renting from the same company or person, there’s only so much help they can offer.

We’re recommending a few steps you can take to resolve these issues peacefully.

Have a Neighborly Conversation

Communication is always important, and if you are comfortable talking to your neighbors, try to open a discussion on noise and respecting each other’s quiet times. Loud noises can be especially disruptive at night, so if you’re kept awake by barking dogs, loud music, or constant parties, a simple conversation with your neighbor may make things better. Don’t be accusatory or angry; approach it in a way that’s respectful and open.

It’s possible that your neighbors don’t realize how easy it is for you to hear them. If they’re reasonable and respectful, a simple chat may be all that’s required, and you’ll notice that things quiet down right away. If they are rude and problematic neighbors who don’t seem to care about your comfort or quality of life, don’t escalate the situation. You don’t want to make things worse for yourself.

Take it to the Police

It’s possible you can enlist the help of law enforcement, especially when it’s a civil issue that isn’t affecting only you, but the entire community. The San Antonio city curfew is 10:00 p.m., so if the police are going to get involved in a noise issue or another disturbance that is simply a nuisance but not a criminal matter, it’s going to have to be late at night.

Don’t be afraid to call the police, but don’t make it a habit, either. If you call every time you hear your neighbors, the police won’t take your complaints seriously. If you call when the noise is really out of control or when other neighbors are also calling, something is more likely to be done.

Talk to Your Property Manager or Landlord

If you leased your San Antonio rental property through a professional management company, you can always appeal to them for assistance. Don’t expect your property manager to solve the problem; it’s difficult for them to get involved with a personal situation. However, your property manager may be able to offer resources and extra advice. For instance, they may be able to check if the neighbor’s property is under professional management so that you may contact that property manager to file a complaint.

Talk to Your Property Manager or LandlordProperty managers are always concerned with the quality of life experienced by their tenants. If you have a responsive management company, they might not be able to solve the problem, but they will be empathetic and make some suggestions that could help.
